Out on a Whim
Thank you for joining me on this creative journey. Let’s explore the world together, one whimsical card at a time.
Welcome to “Out on a Whim”, a space where art and mindfulness intertwine to bring a little more curiosity and connection into your life. I’m Karen Farrugia, a self-taught artist who has spent most of my career behind the chair as a hairdresser. For 35 years I poured my creativity into my salon and clients, but as time passed, I felt the need to slow down and reconnect with something deeper within myself.
Sacred Geometry
My journey back to art began with creating mandalas. I would spend hours creating these captivating designs that seemed to flow naturally from my hands. This journey led me to explore the fascinating world of sacred geometry – a universal language of shapes and patterns that weaves through everything we see and are. These patterns are formed using a compass and straight edge and are still my first love.
Mandala’s
For me, creating patterns and mandalas is a meditative practice and I am constantly exploring and creating new works. I love what I do, it brings me so much joy, and it is a real pleasure to be able to share this art with people. I am always honored when people ask for personal art commissions – it's truly something magical to create these intricate and beautiful artworks for others.
Interconnectedness
In 2023, I felt a deep calling and embarked on a life-changing journey through Europe with my husband, where I left behind my tools and allowed myself to draw more freely and loosely. Immersed in the rich history and the stunning architecture of London, France & Spain, I observed how sacred geometry was woven into the very fabric of churches, gardens, and cityscapes, I felt a profound connection to the world around me. This experience opened my eyes to the interconnectedness of cultures, places, and people, and it inspired me to fully embrace the concept of “Out on a Whim”.
Wonder & Awe
After returning to Australia, I wanted to share more about this beautiful art experience whilst also encouraging others to look around and see the wonder, awe and beauty in the everyday things around us. So, I created Out on a Whim, a monthly art and mindfulness subscription. Every month I create a new and unique art card infused with the essence of sacred geometry but with more spontaneity, bright colours and whimsical journeys. The cards are paired with an insert full of mindful musings and activities which invite you to reconnect with your inner child and the world around you. It’s my hope that each card serves as a reminder to slow down, be curious, and find joy in the simple, yet profound beauty of life.
